How Blackout Curtains Can Improve Your Health

Sleep deprivation is one of the most common problems plaguing the modern world. Our fast paced, global economy often puts demands on us that interfere with our ability to get the quantity or quality of sleep we require to maintain our health. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to serious physical and psychological health problems and ultimately shorten our lives. Controlling your exposure to light can play a key role in ensuring you get the sleep you need. Blackout curtains, used as a window treatment in a bedroom, can effectively block out light and create an ambience that is conducive to restful, restorative sleep.
We are biologically programmed to be asleep when it’s dark and awake when it’s light. Our brains have a built in “light meter” which triggers the release of hormones that control the sleep/wake cycle.  Exposure to light activates the hormone that wakes us up. This is particularly problematic for shift workers and others who need to sleep during the daylight hours. Even for those who have the luxury of working a day job and sleeping at night, the early morning light, seeping into the room, can rob them of precious hours of sleep.  And, any parent who has had their sleep interrupted, at the break of dawn, by a young child, knows the value of ensuring that children’s bedrooms remain dark until it’s time for them to get up.

Curtains that block out sunlight can prove to be a wise investment that can pay big dividends from a health perspective. There are a number of options available that suit any budget. You can easily make your own. Detailed how-to instructions can be found on the internet. Blackout fabric is readily available at most fabric stores. The fabric is generally an opaque coating bonded to high quality cotton or polyester backing which may also be insulated with a thermal lining that reflects heat.

Another inexpensive option is to purchase blackout linings that can be used with existing drapery. Additionally, there are a wide range of ready-made or custom lined blackout drapes on the market which vary in price from modest to expensive. And finally, there is even a portable option, ideal for people who travel a lot for business or pleasure. These portable panels can effectively block out light sources in hotel rooms.

Whichever options you choose, there are certain factors you should take into consideration. One of the most important is measurements. Ideally, the blackout curtains should be longer and wider than the window and have the widest possible panels. Fewer panels reduce the possibility of light getting into the room.  Consider buying curtains that are also insulated with thermal linings that aid in regulating the temperature of the bedroom. Avoid purchasing blackout material or curtains that contain vinyl (polyvinyl chloride, PVC), as studies have soon that vinyl can release chemicals associated with health complications.

It’s estimated that as much as half the adult population suffers from some degree of sleep deprivation and the health problems that go along with it. If you are experiencing difficulty sleeping, you owe it to yourself to create a sleeping environment that fosters deep, uninterrupted sleep. Installing blackout curtains in your bedroom could be one of the best investments you make for yourself and your home.
