Save On Energy Costs With Insulated Curtains

People have known the value of insulated curtains for hundreds of years. Those heavy tapestries that hung in castles worldwide, were not only beautiful works of art, they served a very practical purpose. Castles are drafty places and the tapestries provided much needed insulation. With today’s rising energy costs, finding ways to reduce our energy consumption, while maintaining a comfortable living environment, has become increasingly important.
Insulated window treatments can save you money by reducing your heating and cooling costs. In the winter, the curtains block drafts and prevent heat loss, allowing you to maintain a constant temperature without turning up the thermostat. You’ll want to open the curtains during the day to let in the warmth of the sun but close them at nightfall or in stormy weather.  During the hot summer months, thermal curtains can help prevent heat from entering your home through the windows, reducing the need for air conditioning. Keep the curtains closed during the daytime to maintain the ambient temperature of the room at a comfortable level.

Insulated window curtains not only help control heat exchange, they have a noise dampening effect as well. This means that these curtains can aid in keeping outside noise out and inside noise in. This would come in handy if you have a teenager who insists on turning up the volume on the stereo to ear-spitting levels. The muffling effect of the insulation could help keep the neighbors from complaining about the noise.

Insulated window treatments have the added benefit of increasing privacy and security. Most curtains are partially transparent, particularly at night when there are lights on in the house. People outside your home can see the light cast by lamps and televisions and the silhouettes of people moving about inside the house. Additionally, they are ideal for use in bedrooms, as their thermal, light blocking and sound muffling properties help to create an atmosphere that is conducive to restful sleep. This is doubly important for anyone who works shifts and has to sleep during the day.

These protective curtains are generally made up of a decorative outer layer of fabric lined with high-density foam with an inner layer of reflective film which reflects heat and forms a vapor barrier. Some insulated drapes feature magnetized strips sewn into the side seams of the panels, along with strips that can be mounted on the window frame or wall, preventing heat and light from seeping in around the edges.

Insulated curtains are available in many different styles including tab top panels, pinch pleated drapes and roman shades and can be enhanced with the addition of valances, sheers or shutters. You can choose from a wide range of fabrics for the outer layer, from polyester/cotton blends to silks and brocades. The insulating inner layer serves to protect the outer fabric from sun damage, moisture and dust. Your drapes can be kept clean by going over them periodically with a vacuum cleaner, and spot cleaning or dry cleaning them as necessary.

Insulated curtains are more expensive than many other types of window treatments, but they more durable and are easy to care for. Overtime, the money you can save on energy costs will more than offset the initial cost of your new window treatments.
