Tips On Making Your Own Rod Pocket Curtains

Do you need window treatments for your home or apartment but don’t think you can afford to buy made to measure curtains? There’s no reason why you can’t have attractive curtains on a limited budget. Many types of curtains are surprisingly simple to make and you don’t have to be a seamstress or have any special skills to do it. With some fabric, some basic sewing supplies, an iron, a sewing machine, a curtain rod and a couple of hours of free time, you can have rod pocket curtains made and installed in your window before you know it.  Rod pocket curtain panels have a pocket along the top for a curtain rod and the curtain is gathered along the rod.  These are the simplest curtains to make, so if you are a novice, it’s a good place to start. There are a number of things to consider before you are ready to sew.
The first step to your new curtains is to measure the window you want to dress. You will need to know the width and length of the window. Start by buying a curtain rod that is the correct size for the width of your window. Many curtain rods are sold complete with the hardware you will need to attach it to the window frame or wall. If not, you can buy hardware separately.  Always purchase the curtain rod before you make the curtains, or you may end up with rod pockets on your curtains that are too narrow to fit the curtain rod you bought after the fact.

Now it’s time to consider fabrics. These types of curtains can be made out almost any type of fabric; simple cotton or poly-cotton blends; sheer polyester or organza; or elegant jacquard, silk or damask. If you have never made a curtain before, it would be a good idea to start with an inexpensive fabric.

You will need fabric that is approximately the same width as your window. Fabric comes in different widths, so be sure to check the width of the fabric you are considering. The rule of thumb is that the total width of your two curtain panels needs to be 1.5 to 3 times wider than your window. This gives your curtain fullness when gathered on the rod. If you are using a heavy fabric you don’t want as much fullness as you would with a light sheer fabric. The amount of fabric you require will depend on the length of curtain panel you need. If you check out local fabric stores you can often find excellent bargains on discontinued fabrics or sale items.

One of the easiest types of fabrics to work with is bed sheets. They require minimal sewing because they are already pre-hemmed. Two twin size flat sheets are the perfect width for most standard windows. You need only to sew the rod-pocket top of the curtain and a bottom hem if you require a shorter length. Sheets are available in many colors and patterns. The internet is a good place to purchase high quality designer sheets for bargain basement prices.

You can find detailed step-by-step instructions on how to make rod pocket curtains on the Internet. Give it a try and you will be amazed at how great they look.
